    Changing structures in transnational research networks: an analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on China's scientific collaborations

    Research networks play pivotal roles in the creation and diffusion of knowledge. It is widely acknowledged that frontier research tends to cluster around transnational research networks (TRNs), which also represent strategic tools for nurturing innovation in R&D-intensive companies. Therefore, they are crucial for promoting the rapid development of the knowledge economy in underdeveloped countries. In this context, China's experience is particularly relevant because the country has invested heavily in knowledge production, which is arguably one of the most important structural changes at the global level in recent decades, with important implications for the division of labor and trade among countries. The country has been investing in order to become the scientific world leader, and in this transition, research collaboration, in particular with other countries, can become strategic. In this work, we analyze whether COVID-19 and related research have affected the shape of the network and the intensity of collaborations involving China in the field of health studies, comparing it to the case of the U.S. as the global leader in research (Fry et al., 2020). In particular, we wish to assess whether COVID-19-related research has pushed toward larger and more intensive collaborations internationally than before the pandemic or whether a tendency to closure has prevailed has prevailed. This also means understanding whether COVID-19, as a global phenomenon, has affected China in rising as an international research leader. To do so, we built an original dataset of international, coauthored publications involving China or the U.S. in selected health research fields. Our analysis first shows that COVID-19 research has assumed specific features distinct from other topics in the same research field, shaping research networks in a peculiar way for both China and the U.S. Second, for China, COVID-19 does not appear to have represented an opportunity to further climb up the international research ladder, as it has attracted a relatively low and more volatile number of collaborators from different countries

    Propeller flaps in partial ear reconstruction: a case series

    Background: Ear defect reconstruction still remains a surgical challenge today. Proper reconstruction should result in correction of the deformity with minimum morbidity with the aim of achieving the most esthetically pleasing outcome possible. Herein, we present our clinical experience with propeller flap reconstruction of external ear defects with a focus on indications and surgical technique. Methods: Fourteen patients underwent surgery at our Plastic Surgery Unit between January 2015 and October 2019. After identifying perforators with a handheld Doppler ultrasound, a tailor-made flap was designed for each patient. Following tumor excision, dissection of the pedicle and of the remaining flap was performed with the aid of surgical loops. Flap in-setting and donor site closure were final steps. Results: Flaps have survived in their entirety in almost all our patients (13/14) maintaining optimal color and elasticity and showing no complications. In one case, a superficial distal necrosis was observed and, in another patient, tumor recurrence took place. Conclusions: Propeller flaps offer great advantages when used in ear reconstruction ensuring excellent esthetic results with a one-stage technique.     Heterogeneous effects of spinoff foundations on the means of technology transfer: the role of past academic-industry collaborations

    Focusing on the Italian population of academic entrepreneurs, we analyze the effect of establishing a spinoff firm on researchers' attitudes towards carrying out other activities in collaboration with firms, namely, co-publishing and co-patenting. We investigate the heterogeneity in this effect in terms of existing collaborations with firms in the pre-spinoff period. Using a counterfactual analysis on subgroups, we verify that academic entrepreneurs with previous publications with firms diminish their co-publishing and increase their co-patenting after founding a spinoff. Conversely, academic entrepreneurs who had no previous publications with firms increase their co-publishing and decrease their co-patenting. We maintain that such results are related to academics' learning processes connected with their previous technology transfer activities. The policy implications are related to technology transfer aims and contradict the idea that promoting spinoffs is an appropriate "one-size-fits-all" initiative

    Conceptualizing and measuring “industry resilience”: Composite indicators for postshock industrial policy decision-making

    Can resilience be a relevant concept for industrial policy? Resilience is usually described as the ability of a socioeconomic system to recover from unexpected shocks. While this concept has caught the attention of regional economics researchers seeking to understand the different patterns behind regional recovery after a disruption, it is increasingly recognized that resilience can have policy-relevant conceptual applications in many other regards. In this paper, we apply it to industries and define the “industry resilience” concept and measurements. Our contribution is twofold. Theoretically, we frame industry resilience as a useful conceptual framework for policy-making to support the selection of industrial policy targets that are more capable of recovering after unexpected shocks. In addition, industry resilience can mitigate government failures by supporting decision-makers in promoting both economically and socially sustainable structural change. Methodologically, building on post-2008 U.S. data, we develop two composite indicators (CIs) to separately analyze quantitative and qualitative postshock variations in sectoral employment. Such CIs support policy-makers in visualizing sectoral performances dynamically and multidimensionally and can be used to compare each sector both to other sectors and to its counterfactual. Our results highlight that sectors react heterogeneously to shocks. This points to the relevance of tailoring vertical industrial policies according to sector features and the aims of industrial policy initiatives

    Investigating the linkages between industrial policies and M&A dynamics: Evidence from China

    Mergers and acquisitions (M&As hereafter) have been widely examined in the economic and business literature under many perspectives. However, the industry-level view, specifically the relation between industrial policies and M&A waves at the sectoral level, has remained rather unexplored. This article contributes to fill this gap by empirically investigating the relation between selective industrial policies and M&A waves at the industry level in China. Referring to the four Five Year Plans covering the period 1996-2015, we explore whether being identified as an emerging sector in these plans generates positive or negative changes in the number of M&As. We reiterate the analysis according to the different types of M&As (vertical, horizontal or conglomerate) and the different natures of the acquirer (SOEs or private). Our results suggest that policies can differentially affect M&A waves according to the type of M&A. Moreover, while private firms are more responsive to both horizontal and vertical integration in emerging sectors, SOEs are more prone to engage in vertical M&As. We discuss the possible rationales behind the different behaviors. We also draw general policy implications on strategic industrial policy and market restructuring

    Cyanidiophyceae in Iceland: Plastid rbcL gene elucidates origin and dispersal of extremophilic Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima (Galdieriaceae, Rhodophyta)

    The Cyanidiophyceae are a group of unicellular organisms that diverged from ancestral red algae around 1.3 billion years ago. Present-day species are restricted to hot springs and geothermal habitats from around the world. Because of discontinuous geothermal environments, the distribution patterns and dispersal modes of the cyanidiophycean species are poorly understood. Iceland is the third largest island in the Atlantic Ocean and has intense underground volcanic activity that generates broad hydrothermal areas with different ecological conditions that are excellent for thermoacidophilic microfloral development. We analyzed populations to address the Icelandic cyanidiophycean biodiversity and dispersal. A global rbcL phylogeny showed two main populations inhabiting Iceland, Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima. Their areas of distribution are not completely superimposed because they coexisted only in New Zealand, Kamchatka (Russia), Japan, and Iceland. Because of the strong monophyly of Icelandic species with Japanese and Russian species, we hypothesized an origin and dispersion of Icelandic G. suphuraria and G. maxima from northeastern Asia. On the basis of network analysis of rbcL haplotypes, it is likely that the southwestern region of Iceland is the diversity center of both G. sulphuraria and G. maxima

    Impact of sulfur starvation in autotrophic and heterotrophic cultures of the Extremophilic Microalga Galdieria Phlegrea (Cyanidiophyceae)

    In plants and algae, sulfate assimilation and cysteine synthesis are regulated by sulfur (S) accessibility from the environment. This study reports the effects of S deprivation in autotrophic and heterotrophic cultures of Galdieria phlegrea (Cyanidiophyceae), a unicellular red alga isolated in the Solfatara crater located in Campi Flegrei (Naples, Italy), where H2S is the prevalent form of gaseous S in the fumarolic fluids and S is widespread in the soils near the fumaroles. This is the first report on the effects of S deprivation on a sulfurous microalga that is also able to grow heterotrophically in the dark. The removal of S from the culture medium of illuminated cells caused a decrease in the soluble protein content and a significant decrease in the intracellular levels of glutathione. Cells from heterotrophic cultures of G. phlegrea exhibited high levels of internal proteins and high glutathione content, which did not diminish during S starvation, but rather glutathione significantly increased. The activity of O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OASTL), the enzyme synthesizing cysteine, was enhanced under S deprivation in a time-dependent manner in autotrophic but not in heterotrophic cells. Analysis of the transcript abundance of the OASTL gene supports the OASTL activity increase in autotrophic cultures under S deprivation

    Novel PTCH1 Mutations in Patients with Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumors Screened for Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma (NBCC) Syndrome.

    Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) are cystic tumors that arise sporadically or associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). NBCCS is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited disease mainly characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, KCOTs of the jaws and a variety of other tumors. PTCH1 mutation can be found both in sporadic or NBCCS associated KCOTs. The aim of the current study was to assess whether a combined clinical and bio-molecular approach could be suitable for the detection of NBCCS among patients with a diagnosis of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs). The authors collected keratocystic odontogenic tumors recorded in the database of the Pathology Department of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia during the period 1991-2011. Through interviews and examinations, family pedigrees were drawn for all patients affected by these odontogenic lesions. We found out that 18 of the 70 patients with KCOTs and/or multiple basal cell carcinomas actually met the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of NBCCS. A wide inter- and intra-familial phenotypic variability was evident in the families. Ameloblastomas (AMLs) were reported in two probands that are also carriers of the PCTH1 germline mutations. Nine germline mutations in the PTCH1 gene, 5 of them novel, were evident in 14 tested probands. The clinical evaluation of the keratocystic odontogenic tumors can be used as screening for the detection of families at risk of NBCCS. Keratocystic odontogenic lesions are uncommon, and their discovery deserves the search for associated cutaneous basal cell carcinomas and other benign and malignant tumors related to NBCCS

    Oligonucleotide squelching reveals the mechanism of estrogen receptor autologous down-regulation

    Antisense oligos complementary to the 5'-end, but not to the 3'-end, of the estrogen receptor (ER) messenger RNA caused a paradox accumulation of ER protein in MCF-7 cells, The same effect was observed after treatment of the cells with the corresponding sense oligos, The oligos interfering with ER down-regulation were demonstrated to specifically bind the ER with affinities in the nanomolar range. It is, therefore, proposed that the ER up-regulation induced by the oligos might be due to squelching of the ER (or ER-inducible proteins) from their binding site located in the 5'-end of the ER gene. We also report that transcriptionally inactive ER mutants can undergo down-regulation, and that in denaturing gels, the migration profile of ER-oligo and ER-estrogen-responsive element complexes are dissimilar. We, therefore, propose that ER can interact with DNA in different ways and at different binding sites, These observations might have important pharmacological consequences, since specific drugs could be devised to induce the ER conformation necessary to perform only selected tasks of the ER transcriptional repertoire

    The neuroblastoma SK-ER3 cell line obtained by stable transfection of the human SK-N-BE cell line is proposed as a model for the study of estrogen receptor activity in cells of neural origin, In the SK-ER3 cell line the estrogen receptor, once activated, initiates a differentiation program leading to growth arrest, morphological changes, and acquisition of the dopaminergic phenotype, In the absence of estrogens, this program can be triggered by IGF-I, which can activate the unliganded estrogen receptor via the ras-pathway, It is proposed that this model system might recapitulate the events occurring in vivo during the differentiation of the nervous system and that IGF-I may play an important role in the activation of estrogen receptor at the very early stage of brain development affecting the differentiation of a number of hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic brain regions.
